Should I get a flu shot every year?

What the experts say

Andrea LovePhD · immunologist and microbiologist

Yes, every year, everyone 6 months and older

What it rests onReduced viral load cascading into fewer infections, less transmission, milder illness, fewer hospitalisations and fewer deaths; polyclonal immune memory that recognises shared epitopes on strains not in the vaccine; year-round global strain surveillance rather than guesswork; and roughly 80 years of safety data.

Overview

Love is arguing about the whole population from 6 months up, including the groups at highest risk of severe influenza. Huberman's episode is aimed at a general adult audience interested in optimisation, and its tools chapters are about immune function rather than about influenza specifically. Neither is addressing the other's population directly, which is part of why the disagreement is so hard to resolve on its own terms.

Where they agree

Both treat sleep and general health as supporting immune function, and neither disputes that influenza is transmissible or that behaviour affects exposure.

What would settle it

On Love's side, nothing short of trial evidence that the supplement and sauna tools reduce influenza incidence or severity at a magnitude comparable to vaccination. On the other side, no statement from Huberman on flu vaccination in his own words has been found, so what would move him cannot honestly be said yet.
