The 2021 Rolsky and Kelkar paper claiming over 75% of pod-film PVA survives wastewater treatment was found by the EPA to contain calculation errors, unsupported assumptions, and reliance on data about conventional microplastics rather than water-soluble PVA.

Steier is answering for a general household making a purchasing decision, and her claim is scoped to the purchase, not to the environment. Gomberg's programme is addressed to everyone and is strongest for households with young children and for repeated high-temperature contact, which is not the pod case. Neither is describing the other's situation.
