Is it OK to exercise in the evening?

What the experts say

Jade WuPhD, DBSM · behavioural sleep medicine psychologist

Yes; even moderate-to-vigorous work within two hours of bed is fine, and the old rule is debunked

What it rests onA large real-world study of over 12,000 people in which evening exercisers slept slightly better; and her stated objection to adding arbitrary restrictions

Matthew WalkerPhD · neuroscientist

Evening is fine, but finish more than an hour, ideally ninety minutes, before bed

What it rests onTrial data showing benefit at two to three and a half hours before bed, no harm at ninety minutes, and reduced sleep and efficiency at sixty minutes

Overview

Both sides address general adults, and both experts allow personal observation to override the rule.

Where they agree

Both have retired the old no-evening-exercise advice, Walker explicitly as a reversal of his own. The residual disagreement is roughly one hour of buffer, which makes it a small, honest, live disagreement.

What would settle it

Trials of vigorous exercise finishing inside the final hour before bed with objective sleep measurement.
