Crossfire

How far should I go to get chemicals out of my house?

What the experts say

Beatrice GombergCreator · founder of Tabor Place

Category by category, comprehensively; avoidance is the available defence

What it rests onPrecaution under uncertainty plus a stated view that regulators are not protecting consumers.

Aly CohenMD, FACR, FABOIM · rheumatologist and integrative medicine physician, environmental health

One room at a time, then allow what is left

What it rests onMost people have no toxicology background and do not need one; high-yield changes to everyday habits carry most of the available benefit, and perfectionism costs more than it returns.

Leonardo TrasandeMD, MPP · pediatrician and environmental epidemiologist, NYU

One or two changes, then stop; the rest is a policy problem

What it rests onIndividual purchasing changes reach only the exposures a person controls, and most exposure is set by what materials manufacturers may use.

Overview

Gomberg addresses parents of small children. Trasande's strongest evidence is pregnancy and early childhood and he says so. Cohen addresses adults with chronic or autoimmune illness first, which is her clinical population, and general readers second. A healthy childless adult is outside all three of the populations where the evidence is strongest.

Where they agree

Almost everything at the level of action. All three say keep heat away from plastic, prefer glass and steel for food, filter the water, deal with house dust, and prefer fresh or frozen over packaged. The disagreement is entirely about where to stop and why, and Cohen and Trasande land in nearly the same place from opposite epistemologies.

What would settle it

Biomonitoring showing whether comprehensive avoidance moves biomarkers measurably further than a short list. That single study would resolve the practical question for all three of them.
