Crossfire

Does it matter how you spread your protein through the day?

What the experts say

Alan AragonMS · nutrition researcher, educator, and practitioner

Yes, spread it: at least four meals at about 0.4 g/kg each

What it rests onAcute muscle protein synthesis dose-response work, specifically the 0.25 g/kg per meal estimate plus two standard deviations; the same protein meta-analysis Norton cites for the 1.6 g/kg total.

Total first; distribution is worth maybe the last five to ten per cent, and the trials conflict

What it rests onThe same dose-response meta-analyses; his own PhD work on leucine thresholds; a preference for longitudinal body composition outcomes over acute muscle protein synthesis flux.

Overview

Both are talking about resistance-trained adults trying to build muscle. Neither is making a claim about the general population, and neither claims the difference matters for health outcomes. This is a disagreement about the last five to ten per cent of a hypertrophy result.

Where they agree

Almost everything. They agree on the total to the decimal: about 1.6 g/kg per day with an upper confidence bound of 2.2 g/kg, both citing the same meta-analysis. They agree that total intake dominates. They agree that the longitudinal distribution trials are inconsistent.

What they disagree about is what to do when the outcome data are silent and the mechanistic data are clear: Aragon acts on the mechanism and calls the resulting protocol elegant, Norton declines to act and grades the question Contested. That is a disagreement about a decision rule under uncertainty, not about the evidence, and both sides are right about the facts.

What would settle it

A well-powered longitudinal trial comparing protein distributions at matched total intake, with body composition as the outcome, would settle it for both. Aragon's own paper names this gap explicitly; Norton names the same one.
