Overview

The position stand addresses healthy adults aged 18 and over across 137 reviews, most of whose underlying trials ran 6 to 52 weeks in mixed and largely untrained populations. Israetel's ramp addresses trained lifters already running structured programmes.

A guideline finding no consistent average effect across a heterogeneous literature is not the same claim as no effect in a trained lifter, and flattening it misrepresents the guideline as much as the practitioner.

Where they agree

They agree on the variables that survived: load, weekly volume, full range of motion, progression. They agree that more than you can recover from is the real failure mode. Neither claims periodization is harmful. The dispute is whether structuring those variables across weeks adds anything on top of getting them right, and the guideline's answer is that the evidence does not consistently show that it does.

What would settle it

Trials directly comparing a periodized block against an equated non-periodized programme, run longer than the usual 8 to 12 weeks, in trained lifters rather than students, and measuring adherence alongside hypertrophy. Almost all the periodization literature is short and in untrained subjects, which is why an overview of reviews returns no consistent effect.
